How Chinese Medicine differs from Western Medicine
Conventional medical care and Traditional Chinese Medicine use different approaches to assessment and treatment. Acupuncture may be considered alongside other care, depending on your needs. Discuss your current treatment and medication with your practitioner and medical provider.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a traditional health system that uses concepts such as Qi, Yin and Yang, and patterns of balance to guide care. TCM may include acupuncture, acupressure, Chinese herbal medicine, cupping, massage, therapeutic exercise, and lifestyle guidance. These traditional frameworks complement rather than replace medical diagnosis and treatment when those are needed. That’s why many seek out the Best Acupuncture Calgary practitioners to experience this holistic approach.

Meet Victor Wong and Our Acupuncture Team
Victor Wong and associates practise Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. They work with patients seeking a detailed, individualized approach to their health concerns and wellness goals. The team focuses on clear communication, careful assessment, and complementary care tailored to the individual.
Victor Wong is an acupuncturist registered in Alberta with a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine and family training in Hong Kong. Learn more about Victor Wong and our Calgary acupuncture team, their experience, and their approach to patient care.
Wong’s passion, in his words, is “natural healing.” His role, to “provide guidance for my patients to return to their natural, i.e., healthy and happy selves.” And before you think that too altruistic, consider for a moment the link between mental and physical health: when you feel best, physically, do you not perform ‘best’ on every level?
Your appointment begins with a discussion of your concerns, health history, and goals. Explore our Traditional Chinese Medicine consultations to understand the assessment process and discuss which treatment options may be suitable for you.
Looking for help with a specific concern? Read about arthritis and joint pain, headaches and migraines, or stress and anxiety. These guides explain our approach and questions to discuss at your appointment. Evidence and suitability vary by condition; results are individual, and treatment should not replace necessary medical care.
Our clinic is located at 117 17 Ave NE, Suite 102, in Calgary. Visit our contact page for directions and current clinic hours, or call (403) 230-5553 to ask about appointment availability.
Treatment planning should include clear goals and regular discussion of your progress. Ask your practitioner about the proposed approach, expected benefits, possible risks, and when to reassess. If herbs are being considered, discuss medications and supplements first; learn more about our Chinese herbal medicine consultations.
Preventative care is an important part of Dr. Wong’s philosophy. “Learn to take care of yourself, learn to know your body and when it is not operating at full efficiency.” Paying attention to changes in your health can help you decide when to seek appropriate medical care, lifestyle support, or complementary treatment.
For an independent overview of the research, see the NCCIH guide to acupuncture effectiveness and safety. Research suggests acupuncture may help with certain pain conditions, while evidence for other concerns is less certain. Our acupuncture and acupressure guide explains the treatment differences and what to expect at your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine in which fine, sterile needles are inserted at specific points on the body. It may help with certain pain conditions and headaches, while evidence for other concerns varies.
Do the acupuncture needles hurt?
Most people feel minimal discomfort or nothing at all. Sensations can include a dull ache or warmth. Many find acupuncture relaxing and often fall asleep during sessions.
How does acupuncture work?
The exact mechanisms are not fully understood. Research has examined effects on the nervous system, pain pathways, and local tissue responses, while TCM describes acupuncture through concepts such as Qi and meridians.
Are there any side effects?
Minor side effects can include temporary soreness, bruising, light bleeding, fatigue, or lightheadedness. Serious complications are uncommon when acupuncture is performed by a qualified practitioner using sterile, single-use needles.
Can I combine acupuncture with other treatments?
Acupuncture can often be used alongside physiotherapy, massage, and conventional medical care. Tell your practitioners about your medications, health conditions, and other treatments so care can be coordinated appropriately.
